Pathway 21 operates a cloud-based Materials Marketplace—participants sign up and provide information about reusable materials and services they want to trade, sell or purchase. The Marketplace actively analyzes materials desired and available, and sends participants curated matches. When buyers and sellers are ready to make a transaction, the Marketplace walks them through the process, actively facilitating their communications.

Why it Matters
Reuse could be one of the most overlooked of the Rs in the plastics supply chain. Pathway 21 aims to connect companies looking for materials at a discount with companies that have perfectly usable materials laying around and holds their hand throughout the transaction. Aside from the benefit this has for companies on either side of the transaction (the buyer gets what they were looking for at a discount while the latter realizes a profit they hadn’t planned on), this sort of social system could yield greener products for consumers at lower prices.
