This Is Plastics: Better Recycling (and Biodegradability) through Additives

Rethinking Recycling

TimePlast has created an additive that—when correctly added during the processing of a number of different plastic materials—essentially makes the end product nearly 98% naturally-benign carbon wax, but it looks and feels and performs like regular plastic. The resulting material leaves a much smaller biological footprint than other plastics and also has a 307.5% higher recyclability potential than other plastics. It also fits seamlessly into the existing recycling stream, but loses only 1.6% of its quality per recycling cycle (versus standard plastic which can lose up to 79% of its quality per cycle).

Why it Matters

Additives are a uniquely radical way to hack the recycling process—they make it work better without having to change much in terms of consumer behavior. Companies like TimePlast are using chemistry to make recycling better, making the simple act of recycling even more environmentally beneficial without making you change your habits at all.
